There was great excitement in Mossel Bay this afternoon. Coach Siyabonga and his Thembalethu cricket team arrived 20 minutes early for our meeting. Both players who were injured when we toured here, torn finger web and ball in the face, have fully recovered. With the help of Durbanville Cricket Club and parents, some El Shaddai parents and other parents who heard about the initiative we were able to provide the team with the following: two full cricket sets (bag, pads  gloves, wicky gloves, helmet, thigh and arm pad, match ball, bat etc). Adult cricket pads and shirts for the coach. Each child received a new golfer and shorts as well as a pair of gloves (including the three who could not make it due to exams). Each child also got either a helmet, shoes or pads. In addition we were also able to give them 7 boxes, some caps, bags  and clothing. A huge shout out to those who were able to contribute, you made 15 boys and two coaches very happy. Thank-you to all involved with this wonderful initiative.

Jaco Castle produced a stunning innings to power Whitley Hall to a thrilling five-wicket win over Wrenthorpe in a memorable final at Hanging Heaton. The hard-hitting South African smashed 89 not out off just 45 balls, hitting four sixes and nine fours as his side overhauled a Wrenthorpe total of 296-6 with seven balls to spare.

The power of his stroke-play thrilled the bumper crowd and he produced an amazing finish to the match by taking 20 runs from the first five balls of the 49th over from the experienced Neil Gill. Castle took two from the first ball and then hit three fours before sparking delirious celebrations among the Whitley Hall supporters with a huge six.

It was no surprise that Andrew Hunt selected Castle as the man-of the match, but he was provided with the platform for his blistering assault by Jim Tasker and Chris Siddall. Opener Siddall's 73 off 125 balls with eight fours and Tasker's 88 off 77 balls with three sixes and eight fours may have been overshadowed by Castle's innings but they were equally valuable to their team's first Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy win.

Opener Siddall played patiently as he gave his side a solid base, before the experienced Tasker picked up the tempo. Siddall and Tasker added 96 for the third wicket before the opener was trapped lbw by off spinner David Paynter. Castle arrived at the wicket with his side 166-3 and still needing 131 runs from 14.1 overs.

The odds appeared to be in Wrenthorpe's favour but Castle had other ideas. He soon made his intentions clear and he added 60 runs with Tasker off 42 balls. When Tasker was caught by skipper Gary Fellows off Joe Ellis, Wrenthorpe's reaction was one of a team who thought they had taken the key wicket, but that certainly wasn't the case.

Wrenthorpe skipper Fellows recalled Gill to bowl the 46th over in a bid to stop the flow of runs but his first over went for 10 runs. Ellis briefly raised Wrenthorpe hopes again when he bowled Adam Wilson after he had helped add 51 in 24 balls with Castle. Just three runs came from the 48th, but Castle made up for that in the 49th as he finished the game off in style and wrecked Gill's figures.

Gill wasn't the only bowler to suffer and when Wrenthorpe reflect on their defeat they will be in no doubt that it was their bowling that let them down. Their batting, as ever, was impressive. After seeing Eric Austin caught by wicketkeeper Gary Tidy off Tom Fletcher with just two runs on the board, Fellows and Paynter added 118 for the second wicket.

Paynter looked impressive from the moment he arrived at the crease and clearly enjoyed taking advantage of an excellent batting wicket. Fellows was his usual unruffled self as he made 52 off 69 balls. He struck one six and seven fours before he casually chipped a ball from spinner Tasker to Wilson at midwicket.

Paynter continued to maintain a good tempo and struck five sixes and eight fours in a superb 107 before he was bowled by Alex Welsh.

Ellis (37no) and Bradley Parker (33) provided quick runs at the end of the innings as Wrenthorpe finished on 296-6. Left-arm spinner Alex Welsh (2-49) was the pick of the bowlers for Whitley Hall, but it looked as if Wrenthorpe's total was a match-winning score and it did until that man Castle launched his amazing assault.

It brought a truly memorable end to a magnificent match that will live long in the memories of all those who witnessed it.

DUTCH PART-TIMERS RELISH CWC

2011-02-21 09:31

Nagpur - While cricketing stars like Sachin Tendulkar and Muttiah Muralitharan dream of winning the World Cup, just being in the tournament is an achievement for the Burger King restaurant manager and the accountant playing for Netherlands on the world stage. Read on....

Netherlands' status as one of the smaller nations at the 14-team tournament means that there won't just be professional sportsmen taking to the field for its tournament opener against England on Tuesday.

"There's a tobacconist, a financial adviser, a physio, a fitness trainer," said all rounder Ryan ten Doeschate, just one of three full-time players in the Netherlands' 15-man World Cup squad. Plus, he added,"The odd cricketer."

The likes of Burger King restaurant manager Mudassar Bukhari, and accountant Bernard Loots are among those training evenings and playing weekends around the demands of a full-time job.

Loots, a 31-year-old bowler who works for Australia-based mining firm BHP Billiton in The Hague, said work and cricket leave little time for anything else.

"All in all, I probably have one or two days off a week, and that just in the evenings," Loots said. "Otherwise, it's full-on work and full-on cricket. It keeps us quite busy.

"That's a nice 70- or 80-hour week right there, but I try and get my eight hours' sleep in."

His routine contrasts sharply with that of cricket's superstars, who get schedules tailored specifically to help them develop their skills and peak physically for major contests.

Even after the Dutch cricket board, the KNCB, helps negotiate players' release from their regular jobs for the World Cup, things are tough for the Dutch part-timers.

With training and warmups in Dubai, the squad has been away from home for three weeks even before its first tournament match.

"It is very, very difficult for some of these guys to manage and balance their life given they had to get a lot of time off," coach Peter Drinnen said. "Obviously being away from loved ones for seven weeks, the professional sides are used to that. It's unusual for us."

To help ease the separation, the Dutch players will be given time off to spend with their partners and families when they visit next week.

Loots grew up in South Africa and played cricket while studying management accountancy, but never thought of a professional sporting career in a country so awash with talent that star batsmen Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott ended up playing for England instead.

Loots said he moved to the Netherlands with his girlfriend "to experience life abroad in Europe and a bit of travel." A friendship with batsman Tom de Grooth, which started back home, led to him joining a local cricket club and things simply snowballed.

"The cricket was just a way of integrating into Dutch society," Loots said. "This is a little bonus, if I may say it like that. It's a fantastic experience."

But the identity of Loots' employer is one thing that does make things just a little easier.

"It helps that they are an Australian-South African company, so cricket's part of the culture," Loots said. "They're very supportive of it. If we progress, I'm sure they're going to be fine with it as well."

Thomas’ Tenacious Ton secured Ambergate’s victory over Sandiacre

Ambergate (201-3) beat Sandiacre (117-all out) batting first.

Ambergate arrived at Longmoor Lane on the back of a poor performance the previous week against lower division Shipley Hall. It was overcast; certainly a day that was suited to seam bowling. Ambergate's captain maintained his usual form at the toss and Ambergate were asked to bat. Read on...

Thomas and Holmes opened the batting for Ambergate and made steady but watchful progress against the: pace bowling of Marlow and the accurate seam bowling of Fernley. A sharp catch in the slips by Sandiacre's skipper Goodall, saw Holmes (15) on his way, off the bowling of Fernley. Heath (23) took to the crease following a promotion from his usual position at number 5. Heath and Thomas continued to 92 adding 56 for the second wicket. Heath was caught, after a calculated innings, off the bowling of Jordison. D.Whiteley (31) assumed his role at number 4, the pair added 62 before Whiteley was caught in the deep off the bowling of Goodall; Marlow completed the dismissal by taking his second catch of the day. Fiery Shazhad Ahmed was promoted up the order in an attempt to add quick runs in the later stages of Ambergate's innings and to shepherd Thomas to his long awaited DCCL maiden hundred; he remained not out on 71. The pair added 47 to leave Ambergate 201-3 at the interval. Thomas finished a magnificent, well-paced innings on 100 not out which included 6 fours, 2 sixes and was reached in the last over off 141 balls.

Jordison and Priestley took to the field to commence Sandiacre's innings. Mason bowled a respectable opening spell and conceded only 15 runs off his 10 overs, however, Ball was the first to strike dismissing Jordison (2) who was caught by S.Beveridge at backward point. Ruhrmund batted at 3, he and Priestly looked promising after a fragile start. They added 51 for the second wicket and looked in command until Ruhrmund (26) took a suicidal run to wicket keeper C.Whiteley, who scampered from behind the stumps, releasing the throw to Thomas who completed the run out. Leek (22) came to the crease and added 36 for the third wicket with Priestly, before being stumped off the bowling of Wallace. This was the start of what can only be described as a monumental collapse. Sandiacre went from 92-2 to 117 all out. This was mainly due to the accurate bowling from Ambergate's slow bowlers Wallace and Thomas who finished with figures of 4-21 and 4-10 respectively. The only real resistance was provided by Priestley (39) who was caught at slip by D. Whiteley of the bowling of Thomas.

To celebrate Thomas' superb effort and their return to form, the 1st XI joined Ambergate stalwart Alan Poplar for a welcome drink to celebrate his 70th birthday. Ambergate's 1st XI host Aston on Trent next week, where they hope to maintain or better their place in the Division 2 league table
